12:48 am - You have to try your hand at this...
This is a tremendously fun game. And I'm not going to say that you have to pick any particular candidate... choose whichever one you want. :)

The Red Sox made it to the World Series, and they beat the Yankees to do it!!!

This makes me happy. :)

12:18 pm - And a quick thank you...
...to the lovely indefatigable42 for the sandwich toaster turnover suggestion. I tried it last night with a mix of apple and blackcurrant pie fillings. They were lovely! I decided they would be best served hot off the toaster with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of strawberry sauc on top. They were very yummy indeed. :)

11:55 am - I'm meeeelllllltinnnnng....
When I lived in the US, especially Boston and New York, I was used to temperatures in the 90s and even low 100s with very high humidity during the summer. I would read posts from my UK friends complaining about how horribly hot it was when the weather pixies said it was only 75 degrees with 70% humidity. When we got days of just 75 degrees and 70% humidity, we counted our blessings and went out to enjoy the nice, cool weather. When I came over here for a narrowboat holiday in August of 2002, I was fleeing the 80 degree temperatures of NYC to the blissfully cool low 70s of England. I think I wore shorts a grand total of one day of that whole trip, and jeans the rest of the time, with a light jacket for the evenings. So of course, I laughed at my UK friends for being such wimps...

There was one major factor I failed to take into account. On the US East Coast, we have that lovely, gradual warming trend where summer starts with the 70s, builds up over June and July until temps hit the 90s or more, then gradually the temps fall as autumn approaches. Here in the UK.... there's no such thing as gradual weather changes. The body has absolutely NO CHANCE to adjust. Once the heat hits, it hits hard. (Add this to the fact that air conditioners are not nearly as prolific over here, because they apparently weren't really all that necessary until recent years.)

I'm currently sat in my flat, windows open, staying out of any direct sunlight, wearing t-shirt and shorts only because it's very easy to see in the windows. My face is already starting to show signs of minor heatstroke and I haven't even set foot out the door yet!

So to all my nearest and dearest here in the UK... I promise I will never laugh at you again for complaining about the heat... I now know that you have every reason and right to bitch about it. :)

And now I have to get up the energy to go down to Safeway for dinner stuff...

2:20 pm - Sometimes work amuses me...
Last Friday, one of the Credit Control women came down to ask us a question. While here, she told us about a complaint call she had recieved from a customer. The customer claimed that she wished to lodge a complaint because her photocopier swore at her. This, of course, made the credit controler scratch her head in puzzlement, but she soon got to the bottom of the mystery.

The photocopier in question is one of the newer models and has copy/print/fax capability. With the fax, it remembers the number you put in and keeps trying if your fax doesn't go through the first time. The customer had put in the phone number to fax to, and it was someone's direct extension. The machine made several fax attempts before the recipient finally picked up the phone and yelled "Fuck you!" which came through on the customer's end causing her to think her machine had an attitude problem. :)

In short, it's not a terrible feature for a machine to be able to receive voice from the other end of line, in case such situations arise... but it does help if the recipient makes a comment the *first* time the machine attempts to send the fax. :)

12:10 pm - Lazy, hazy Saturday...
Well, I have the house to myself today. I'm taking the time to reclaim the bedroom floor from the overly full laundry bags. I *will* prevail!

I also thought I would get some exercise by putting on silly 80s music and dancing around like a fool. It's quite fun! Just taking a little break at the moment to enjoy lunch (chicken, cheese and leek pastry and a nice salad) and catch up on LJ a bit.

How is everyone out there in LJ land today?

2:12 pm - OMG! An update!
I actually have a little time to post today... that's just odd... :)

Not a whole lot going on with me, sadly. I have yet to start on my job search, but will very soon, I suspect. Things have settled down a bit here now that Sam is back. The other two can't make me as miserable when I have the nice one to talk to.

Just got back on Monday from spending the weekend with a few people and a nearly equal number of ferrets, which was quite entertaining. Who would have thought a ferret would like beer? :)

Spring is in the air... and up my nose. Anyone here in the UK have any suggestions for allergy sufferers? I have to have non-drowsy stuff, but am not allergic to much in the allergy pill department as far as I know. Any input would be appreciated by me *and* my workmates who are losing their voices by blessing me every few seconds when I sneeze. Although it might actually be nice if a couple of them can't speak...

My apologies for the disjointedness of this post... I'm just letting my brain spew a bit. That and I have consumed caffeine in preparation of the mad pre-inspection flat cleaning frenzy tonight. I can't wait for the letting agents to get this over with.

All in all, though, I'm relatively happy and mostly healthy and looking forward to the weekend, whatever it may bring.

7:48 pm - Anyone know?
Is it still possible to cash in unused invite codes for paid time? My time is about to expire and I had several codes to cash in. If it's still possible, can someone post a link for me to follow? I can't find any info on it in the FAQ...

1:42 pm - Best spam header of the day...
"lie chalkline immaculate imp"

Not sure what is means, but it amused me. You know, I think I could get to like this new variation on spam... there's never any need to open a spam email, but at least these random word generator headers provide more entertainment than garden variety penis enlargement/breast enhancement, bank scams, porn and drugs.

Work is going quite well. My temp ID is actually activated to allow me to put money on it to use in the canteen, which I've just tried out... mmm... toffee muffin...

I'm slowly meeting all the important people I need to know in order to do my job properly. I'm here full-time to replace two part-time ladies who are both going on maternity leave. One left last Friday and the other has her last day tomorrow. Slowly the job is sinking in and I seem to be picking up speed. By the time I leave, I should be pretty good at using adding machines and suchlike without fear of hitting the wrong button. Dyslexia proves problematic in that regard, as I'm sometimes not sure exactly what order the numbers are supposed to appear in...

Anyway, I should get back to work now...

1:05 pm - Morning surprises
As I was walking to work this morning, a passing car slowed down as if they wanted to ask for directions...

The next thing I know, my supervisor pops her head out the passenger side window and says, "Get in. We're abducting you!"

It's not that I particularly needed a ride to work, since it's less than a 10 minute walk downhill to get there. Still, I was amused. And I even got here a few minutes early as opposed to exactly on time or a few minutes late. :)

3:22 pm - Stupidity of the day
Where I work, we have a lovely little moat/pond/canal thing running alongside the building. This morning, some idiot managed to drive the front end of his car into it. The most amazing thing about this is that the area where this happened is not a parking area... there is, in fact, no reason for a car to be anywhere near there in the first place.

I was highly amused...

10:50 am - Motivation... finally!
I got up fairly early this morning and ran myself a nice, hot bath. I figured it being before 9am, I wouldn't have to worry about missing any telephone calls. So no sooner do I start to settle back into the water, I hear the phone. Cue mad dash for bathrobe, then mad dash downstairs to answer the phone.

It was one of my job agencies asking if I was free next week! I get to go play legal secretary for a week for reasonable pay. They are even okay with the fact that I can only work for a few hours on Thursday because I have an appointment with another agency in central London that day.

This is good. I feel like a very large weight has been lifted. I'd been feeling horribly guilty about not working, and frustrated and fretful that this would be yet another 8 months of unemployment like I had to deal with in NY. I realise this is only a week-long assignment, but it's better than nothing and gives me more motivation to keep looking.

Oh and kiri_l, thank you for putting me in touch with your friend over here. Even though he works in the wrong field of law, he was able to give me a few very good ideas on where I should look.

So, yeah... I get to work next week. :)

11:29 am - Well... I've gone and done it... :)
It's been quite a while since I've updated. Life sort of got in the way and all that jazz. :)

I've moved! I'm now living in a lovely flat in Surrey and am surrounded by lovely people. Apologies to those I haven't had a chance to see yet since I got here, and apologies to those I didn't get to see much before I left Brooklyn.

I think I'm finally settling in now. The time zone isn't bothering me much any more. I even seem to be banishing that nagging feeling that any day now I have to go back to the airport and fly back to NY. I really do live here... wow... *grin*

Much of my time over the last two weeks has been spent trying to find a job. I think once I have one, I'll feel even more at home and will be considerably happier. I'm one of those freaks who gets very uptight and antsy and stressed being out of work. So if anyone here in the UK knows of any openings for someone with fairly strong paralegal experience, feel free to let me know. :)

One of these days, I may even get around to unpacking my boxes... :)

1:16 pm - Argh! NOW what?!?!
I have more stuff than I thought... this is not good. I have to call the shipping company today and book the van to pick up my stuff. Unfortunately, I think I may need to get new quotes, as it looks like I might have to add another box. I thought it would all fit in the big box I have here in my room, but it didn't... still 4 pairs of shoes, various small boxes, and some blankets and towels...

I just want to be done with all this!!!

On the plus side, I have potential buyers lined up for the futon, wardrobe, and exercise machine. No one seems to want the bed, so I'll probably have to pawn it.

9:26 pm - *blink**blink*
Wow... today has been a busy day on LJ.

I've spent the entire day in various planes, trains and automobiles only to get to my sister's house and catch up on LJ... to find that I have been de-friended by someone for what I think might be "guilt by association" reasons, as I certainly wasn't involved in any way in the conversation that seems to have raised so many hackles.

In a way, I'm a little upset about this... not about this person deciding she doesn't consider me a friend any more, but because the only possible reasons I see for it are really flimsy. I do hope tempers cool on all sides of the issue, as I think they probably are doing/have done by this point.

Ah well, such is life...

Will post more soon-ish... need to get off here and visit with my family. :)

12:54 pm - Okay... this radio station rocks!
The noon-1pm radio show is just awesome. They start with a Beatles block and go on to play things you wouldn't necessarily hear on the radio much these days...
